Our skin is one of the largest organs of our bodies. It protects us from germs, and houses everything that makes us our unique self. Beauty is not just skin deep but also on the outside and many strive for the light, clear skin free of blemishes and marks. Realistically speaking though, we do not have perfect skin, but it is possible to get pretty close. Those little marks here and there, sun spots, blemishes, freckles, darkening skin due to stress, tiredness and exposure to sun are among some of the things we most commonly see on the outside. Lighter skin makes us look and feel healthy and young and there are many great ways to achieve this with safe ingredients both home-made and modern-made.

What Makes our Skin Darker?

Our skin naturally produces Melanin which is responsible for skin pigmentation and also serves as a means for protecting our skin from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. Sun-exposure has a lot to do with melanin production and can bring about other pigmentation of the skin such as freckles and uneven skin tone. Have you every noticed after a trip to the beach or other sunny outing that your skin gets darker? That is because the melanin production is in full swing. Over time, your body thinks it needs to keep producing large amounts and ends up overproducing melanin. Stress, lack of sleep, and some of our habits can also have effect on how our bodies produce melanin that is why a little self-love goes a long way. Some people turn to bleaching their skin to achieve lighter skin faster, but they do not realize just how harmful it is for their skin and creates other problems in the long run. Quick is not always the best method, so we will share a few safe and effective alternatives to lighting up your skin.

A Safe and Quality Serum

DermalMD makes a fantastic skin lightening serum specially formulated to lighten skin and even out skin tone. What is not to love about a product that is not only safe but proven to work? The bonus is that is it easy to apply and more cost effective than bleaching your skin. The Next Step To Lighter Skin Is In Your Kitchen

Once you have a great serum like the one from DermalMD (or even if it have not ordered it yet) you can take natural steps to lighter skin in your own kitchen! Ingredients like lemon, honey, and turmeric can work wonders on your skin and you probably already have some of them in your home.

Lemon

Lemons are a great way to lighten your skin because of their acidity. When life gives you lemons why not make a mask to lighten your skin, right? You simply cut the lemon in half, and apply some of the juice to the areas of your skin that you would lighten. This is easily applied with a cotton ball or swab. If you have more lemons you can even make yourself a lemonade but just be sure not to expose your skin to the sun while indulging in your lemon mask. After an hour simply rinse your face with warm water and enjoy the sights! You can do this on a weekly basis.

Honey

Honey is another great ingredient due to its antibacterial properties and enzymes that promote healthy skin.  Honey masks are messy fun and make your face very smooth with a beautiful look. Similar to the lemon mask you simply apply honey to your face and then wash your face carefully with warm water after about 10 to 15 minutes. You can even kick it up a notch by mixing the lemon and honey together! You can make the honey and lemon mask by mixing 2 tablespoons of lemon juice with 1 tablespoon of honey.

Turmeric

A member of the ginger family, turmeric boasts many benefits for your skin as well. Not only is it great for cooking, but has medicinal qualities. Turmeric can help repair free radicals in the skin and reduce skin pigmentation which is great for skin discoloration. The beauty of this ingredient is that you can combine it with the Lemon and the honey to make another fabulous mask. Simply combine 1 teaspoon of Turmeric Powder, 1 Tablespoon of honey and the juice of half a lemon and apply to your face. You can leave this mask on for 15 to 20 minutes and then rinse with warm water and washcloth.
